Mary Bethune was the daughter of former slaves who, after receiving her college degree, moved to Florida and in the early 1900’s began a college for African American students. As president for 20 years, she would tell her graduating seniors, “May God grant you not peace, but glory.” Using some of the world’s greatest speeches (Churchill’s “Blood, Sweat and Tears,” King’s “I Have a Dream,” Jim Valvano’s “Never Give Up,” Lou Gehrig’s “Farewell to Baseball” and others) as a backdrop, we will explore what Jesus taught about a life that is truly glorious. And we will discover that we can be comfortable or we can be glorious but we can’t be both.
