Faith Builders

The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. - Matthew 7:25

Faith Builders started as a vision for one member of The Woodlands United Methodist Church. It was a vision God placed on his heart.

Today it is a fledgling ministry led by The Woodlands UMC to build appropriate housing for members of our community and congregation who live in less than desirable homes. It is a ministry that brings together individual volunteers, organizations, businesses and government agencies  to use their skills, contacts, and finances in an effort of faith.

The first project tackled by Faith Builders was “Eleanor’s House.” It recently completed the ambitious goal of building a new house for Eleanor to replace her mobile home that was beyond reasonable repair and didn’t meet the needs of her very special family.

The Woodlands UMC Faith Builders partnered on Eleanor’s House with Montgomery County Community Development, a HUD sponsored program using Community Development Block Grant funding to help the low income families of Montgomery County with their housing.

Eleanor’s House

Willie Shaver met Eleanor as a volunteer for the Special Blessings Ministry. Eleanor is a member of the The Woodlands UMC congregation. She is a widow who is sole provider and caregiver for her two teenage grandchildren whose mother, Eleanor’s daughter, died. Eleanor’s grandchildren are very special to her, but they also have very special needs. The oldest boy is autistic. His sister is low functioning with multiple disabilities and is confined to a wheelchair.

Willie and other members of our congregation began to pray for Eleanor’s needs. That’s when God placed the vision of Faith Builders on their hearts - they felt called to pool the resources of our church and community to stop repairing Eleanor’s old mobile home and build this family a brand new house designed for their special needs. The call spread to the members of the men’s Quest ministry and then to a small group of volunteers who began what is today The Woodlands UMC Faith Builders, a mission with a short term goal to build "Eleanor’s House," and a longer term mission that awaits God’s further call.

The Woodlands UMC Faith Builders received commitments from dozens of local businesses and contractors and almost two hundred individuals who have now completed Eleanor’s House.

Eleanor’s House was dedicated in a ceremony on Sunday, June 28, 2009.
